Last week we were tasked on two separate occasions to recover a body from the foot of Beachy Head cliffs. These are clearly not the most pleasant jobs for us or the local Coastguard teams to deal with and they often go unnoticed and unreported in the media. Needless to say, this is not why people volunteer to become RNLI crewmembers and clearly has a lasting effect on the individuals involved.
The recovery last Thursday was slightly different. On 5th Feb, shortly after midnight, a man was lost overboard from a tug in appalling weather and sea conditions. Despite our best efforts and many hours at sea by both Eastbourne and Newhaven lifeboat crews he was not recovered. The man we recovered on Thursday has since been officially identified as that missing seaman. Naturally our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of Stephen Robert Trice but at least they now have closure and can begin their grieving process.
