CIMG1136Eastbourne RNLI’s all-weather lifeboat was called into action yesterday afternoon (10 Jan) when a fisherman aboard a Dutch trawler sustained a serious hand injury requiring urgent medical assistance.

The Dutch registered trawler Nova Cura was fishing 18 miles off Eastbourne when the accident occurred. Aware that the fishing protection vessel HMS Mersey was in the vicinity the Dutch skipper requested any help they could give. A first aid team was transferred to the trawler using Mersey’s fast boarding rib and assessed that the crewman should be taken to hospital. Dover Coastguard search and rescue were monitoring the situation and requested the launch of Eastbourne lifeboat to assist. With Doctor Colin McKee on board, Eastbourne ALB Diamond Jubilee was soon speeding to the location. When on scene Dr McKee was transferred to the trawler by Mersey’s rib and prepared the casualty for transportation to hospital. Diamond Jubilee was manourvered alongside the trawler and the casualty and Dr McKee taken aboard. When back at Sovereign Harbour the casualty was handed to a waiting ambulance and taken to Eastbourne DGH
