Eastbourne’s all-weather lifeboat launched this morning at 06.30 (1 August) to assist an 11 metre yacht which had got entangled in fishing gear outside Sovereign Harbour

The yacht with two people on board had just left harbour on passage to Dover when it got entangled in fishing gear within a mile of the harbour entrance. Rope cutters on the yachts propeller cut away some of the obstruction but the rudder remained jammed which rendered the yacht’s steering inoperative. Soon on scene two volunteer crewmen from the lifeboat were transferred to the disabled vessel and secured an alongside tow. The yacht was then returned to the safety of the marina locks.
