The volunteer crews of Eastbourne lifeboats had another sleepless night when they were tasked twice during the late evening.

The inshore lifeboat was launched shortly before 8pm following a report from Solent Coastguard that a catamaran had run aground and was taking on water. The initial location was described as ‘on rocks somewhere near Eastbourne’. Whilst the ILB searched from Sovereign Harbour heading west, Solent were making further enquiries as to the exact location. Eventually it was established that the casualty was off Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight and not Eastbourne. The ILB was stood down and returned to station.

Shortly after 11pm the crew’s rest was again disturbed when their pagers summoned both boats to launch. A body had been located on the beach below the cliffs at Beachy Head. With the all-weather lifeboat acting as support the inshore lifeboat landed four crew members at the scene who prepared the casualty for transfer into the care of the police coroner who was waiting at the ILB station.
