Both Eastbourne lifeboats were requested to launch by Dover Coastguard last night at 11.05pm (26 June) following multiple reports of red flares being spotted off Eastbourne.

The police and coastguard had received several reports from the public in different locations, including aboard a yacht returning to Sovereign Harbour, that red flares had been sighted off the coast. The volunteer crews of both lifeboats assisted by local coastguard teams and the coastguard rescue helicopter then spend almost six hours in a complex and thorough search of the whole area. With nothing found the crews were finally stood down. The boats were made ready for service and the crews dismissed, by this time it was nearly 5.00am. Some of the volunteer crew then faced the daunting prospect of making their weary way to work.
