The group had walked to Beachy Head lighthouse and were returning to the steps at Cow Gap when they realised one of their colleagues had disappeared. Aware that the tide was flooding, and fearful that he had stumbled amongst the rocks and become trapped, they contacted Dover Coastguard for assistance. HM Coastguard requested the immediate launch of Eastbourne’s inshore lifeboat. The volunteer crew assembled and were under way within 10 minutes of the request. The ILB crew located the walker safe and well at Falling Sands, a long way behind his colleagues, and stood by until the group were reunited at Cow Gap.
