Lifeboats from Eastbourne and Hastings along with Coastguard rescue helicopters conducted a comprehensive search on Sunday for a diver who failed to surface after a deep water dive 11 miles off Hastings.
A ‘Mayday’ distress call was received shortly after 10am from a local dive charter boat when one of their divers failed to fully surface. Eastbourne lifeboat was on exercise in the area at the time and was quickly on scene. Coastguard rescue helicopters, various fishing vessels, and a boat from Pets Rescue also joined in the hunt. Co-ordinated by HM Coastguard a comprehensive search of a wide area ensued. Regrettably nothing was found and the search was finally abandoned at 17.30.
