Wedding celebrations for lifeboat Coxswain Mark Sawyer were briefly interrupted on Saturday afternoon when the volunteer crew were paged following reports that one of a group of revellers had got into difficulties after jumping from Eastbourne Pier
Shortly after 2pm (Sat 25th June) the volunteer crew of Eastbourne’s inshore lifeboat (ILB) launched to assist a young man who had jumped from the pier and then clambered up the support structure to escape the cold water. Local lifeguards who witnessed the incident were on scene but were unable to persuade the individual to re-enter the water in order to be escorted to the beach. When the ILB arrived the casualty was quickly convinced that his best option was to release his hold on the pier and board the lifeboat. Following a short safety advice briefing on the dangers of mixing alcohol and cold water swimming, he was taken ashore and passed to waiting police officers. The lifeboat crew were then released from service to return to the wedding party.
