Eastbourne RNLI’s inshore lifeboat launched at 7.20pm last night following reports that a male person had jumped from Eastbourne pier and was showing signs of cold water shock

Members of the public were concerned when they witnessed the vulnerable 27 year old jump from the pier and immediately began to suffer in the cold water. He managed to clamber up the pier supports before screaming for help. HM Coastguard received several 999 calls and requested the immediate launch of the inshore lifeboat (ILB). The volunteer lifeboat crew assembled and were quickly on scene. The casualty was taken aboard the ILB and transferred to the beach where he was passed into the care of waiting police, coastguard and ambulance personnel.

Community Lifesaving at Eastbourne RNLI. ...

A good crowd turned up yesterday to practice making dummy DSC distress calls on the closed circuit system. They learnt not only how to make them but what to do when their set receives one . The tuition was expertly given by RNLI area trainer/assessor Dave Needham ( also volunteer crew member in Eastbourne) who was assisted by Eastbourne coxswain Mark Sawyer and volunteer crew member Alan Simister in the Lifeboat Station at Sovereign Harbour. Everyone enjoyed the friendly , relaxed atmosphere and after the 'hands on' session went away feeling confident that they knew what to do should the need arise. Members who missed this opportunity will have another chance in the early autumn when the course will be run again due to popular demand.
